Bulgaria ranks first in the European Union as the country which suffered the highest proportion of online virus infections, a European Commission statement said on Juli 28 2012.
Nearly 58 per cent of Bulgarians with access to the internet said that they were affected by viruses in 2010, nearly double the European Union average of 31 per cent. Bulgaria is followed by Malta with 50 per cent, Slovakia 47 per cent, Hungary 46 per cent and Italy 45 per cent, and the lowest in Austria 12 per cent, Ireland 15 per cent and Finland with 20 per cent.
Bulgarians, going by the statistics, were also top of the charts in falling victim to misuse of personal data over the internet. Only this time, Bulgaria shares the perch with Spain. About seven per cent of Bulgarians polled said that they were "victims" of identity fraud or other related misuse of personal information.
In total, 84 per cent of all interviewed across Europe said that they used some form of protection against viruses, the report said.
The research was conducted in the third quarter of 2012 across the European Union.
On average, five per cent of European families said that children living with them gained access to inappropriate material in 2012, the report said. For Bulgaria that was eight per cent, ranking the country third behind Italy and Latvia with 11 and nine per cent, respectively.
On the opposite side of the scale were Cyprus and the Czech Republic with a rate of one per cent of children accessing inappropriate material. However, the statement cautioned that the figures were based on reported detections of such incidents, and the real figures could be much higher.
